Early morning, the dogs are loaded into
trucks and
ready to go. The sun is rising, and we are searching for a bear track.
Once a bear track is located, the
hounds are turned
loose to trail and jump the bear. Music of the the hounds echoes
through the mountains; listening to their voices as they get closer to
the bear. Then they jump him! The race is on!
In vehicles, we follow in hot pursuit
of the
frenzied dogs. The bear will eventually bay up or tree. At this point,
we make the final approach on foot (sometimes a mile or more).
At the bear tree, the dogs are leashed
back, and you are positioned for a clean shot.
Open sight rifles should be .30 caliber
or greater
for hunting bear with dogs. I prefer .35 or .45 caliber. Sight
your rifles in dead on at 25 yards. Your shots will be usually be no
more than
that and often closer.
